Luke designed and installed a guard for the rolling line coil pit sensors. Information from Production showed 16.5 hours of downtime was due to damaged sensors. As a result of Luke's project this downtime has now been reduced to zero. Luke also designed and manufactured a drill head guard which not only improves the safety of the machine but also makes it easier to change the drills thereby limiting downtime at changeover. Finally he designed and made a new style saw guard. The old Perspex guard kept getting damaged, 6 replaced in the previous 12 month peiod, each one taking 2 hours to replace. In contrast the new fine mesh guard has not needed a replacement in over 12 months.
Marc a 3rd year apprentice in 2007
Marc used 3D modeling to design new tooling for a press upgrade on one of our rolling lines. The cut off press was increasing from 80 tonnes to 160 tonnes which would require a re-design to the machine bed to ensure we could use the press with the present tooling as well as accommodate the new tooling. Marc then used the 3D modeling to produce 2D drawings for manufacture purposes Marc project managed the design, manufacture and installation from start to finish and ultimately saved the company approximately £10k on external designing costs alone.
