Metsec top of the class with education award

A Black Country company has won a top award for its involvement in local education.

Metsec, which produces cold rolled steel sections and profiles, was among winners at the Sandwell Education Business Partnership Quality Showcase Awards.

Presented at Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens, the prestigious Awards recognise links that benefit both the business community and those in education.

Metsec won a Quality in Work Experience Placements award.

It has partnerships with four Sandwell schools, and its own apprentices act as ambassadors for the company, visiting schools regularly and helping pupils with projects.

Operated by the Black County Metals Academy Industry/Schools Partnership Agreement, Metsec and the schools enter into three-year strategic partnerships, which see the promotion and teaching of engineering and manufacturing to young people.

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council cabinet member for schools and lifelong learning Councillor Ian Jones said: “This is an excellent example of an extremely successful partnership between Sandwell schools and a leading member of the business community.

“It is fitting that we celebrate the outstanding work that is going on for the benefit of Sandwell students and the businesses they will be joining in adulthood.”

More than 80 businesses were represented at the event, including Asda, Barclays Bank, Birmingham Airport, Habitat, Ikea, Jaguar, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Pizza Hut.
