The ongoing redevelopment of Birmingham’s City Centre recently saw the creation of 3 buildings, each of 5 storeys, in a £23 million project to create 258 apartments as well as ground floor retail space. This was part of a 24 month construction programme during which it took approved Metsec installers 14 months to install around 77 tonnes of 150 mm SFS infill to the existing concrete frame. The SFS infill walling was installed between the main concrete frame members, covered with insulation boards and fitted with stainless steel wall tie channels, providing the fastest possible weather tight structure. This enabled an earlier start date for the dry-lining and the building's first fit out and took the external cladding off the critical path.
The completed structure was then clad in terracotta, cedar, render and blockwork and provided the developers with the quickest and most efficient way to achieve a dry envelope on the Post Box retail and apartment development in Birmingham City Centre, cutting an estimated 16 weeks off the build time.
